Conversely, the Laodicean church may claim, “I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing,” but Jesus sees its true condition being “wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked” (3:17). The problem for the church is that it thinks that it is ahead when truly it is behind. In fact, the church’s wholehearted belief that it is ahead is the greatest obstacle to being faithful. When you think you are strong, you inevitably trust in your strength to solve problems and meet needs. When you are rich, you inevitably believe that what you have to offer in ministry is your riches. When you are a hammer, you see the entire world only as a bunch of nails to be pounded in.
